Weight loss, unexplained hair loss, fatigue? Check Your Thyroid Level – Doctor Explained | health news

Abnormal production of thyroid hormones drives the most common thyroid problems – hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. When too much thyroid hormone is produced, it causes a condition called hyperthyroidism. Inadequate hormone production leads to hypothyroidism. With proper and timely diagnosis and treatment, thyroid problems can be managed fairly easily in most cases. However, if your thyroid isn’t working properly, it can affect your entire body because the thyroid gland controls several important functions. Your thyroid gland affects almost all of your body’s metabolic processes through the hormones it produces. So it is important to know the common symptoms that may indicate a thyroid problem. Dr. Arun Kumar C. Singh, Director – Endocrinology and Diabetology, Metro Hospital, Faridabad, shares his insights.

Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism: Key Symptoms

Thyroid disorders exhibit a spectrum of manifestations, emphasizing the key role of early detection of symptoms for effective diagnosis and management, Dr. Arun Kumar C. Singh said. Talking about the symptoms, Dr. Singh shares, “Fatigue often acts as a common red flag along with unexplained weight fluctuations. Hypothyroidism, characterized by an underactive thyroid, can lead to dry skin, hair loss and heightened sensitivity to cold.” Hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid condition, can manifest through rapid heart rate, heightened anxiety, and noticeable weight loss.”

Mood changes, including feelings of depression or irritability, can be an indication of thyroid dysfunction, says Dr. Singh. “The presence of goitre, or swelling of the neck, signals a possible thyroid concern. Women with thyroid disease usually experience irregular menstrual cycles and fertility problems. Additionally, muscle weakness and joint pain can accompany the condition,” says the doctor.

Cholesterol levels are sensitive to thyroid dysfunction, contributing to fluctuations between high and low levels. Dr. Singh adds, “Monitoring changes in bowel habits is also very important; hypothyroidism can be associated with constipation, whereas diarrhea can indicate hyperthyroidism. Being aware of these varied symptoms empowers individuals to seek immediate medical attention, promoting effective management of thyroid disorders overall. enhancing health outcomes,” explains Dr. Singh.
