Treating Mumps Using Ayurvedic Practices – Expert Explained | health news

In March, Kerala saw an outbreak of mumps – a contagious viral infection, which primarily affects the salivary glands, causing painful swelling, especially around the cheeks and jaw. Doctors say that although most cases are mild, complications can occur, making it important to understand its symptoms, prevention measures and available treatments. Dr. Ravi Shankar Polisetty, founder of Poly Scientific Ayurveda, shares his insights on treating mumps following Ayurvedic practices.

Mumps and the Ayurvedic Perspective

“Mumps is called “Kamamulka” if it is caused by an increase in Pitta dosha and “Rasputana”, if it is caused by an increase in Vata dosha. It is seen as a result of an imbalance in the body’s doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) ) Ayurveda’s overall view is that only physical symptoms but also includes the individual’s overall health, lifestyle and constitutional makeup. This perspective allows for a more personalized and comprehensive treatment approach by addressing the root cause of the illness rather than just the symptoms,” shared Dr. Ravi Shankar Polisetti.

The role of dosha in mumps

Each dosha plays a specific role in the development and progression of mumps, says Dr. Polisetti. Here’s how:

Vata is associated with the movement and spread of pathogens within the body, leading to the initial symptoms of pain and swelling.

Pitta contributes to inflammation, fever and redness, reflecting the body’s metabolic response to viral infections.

Kapha is associated with swelling and fluid accumulation, which manifests as the characteristic puffiness around the cheeks and jaw.
