Can drinking too much tea or coffee affect your teeth?

Dr. Bhatia shares “A rule of thumb to remember about stains is, if it can stain your clothes, it can stain your teeth. Then, tea and coffee have the potential to stain your teeth, due to substances called tannins, which are a type of polyphenol that breaks down in water.

These tannins will be indicated by the color combination attached to the teeth, and when they stick, they can leave behind an unwanted yellow shade. These problems can happen from as little as one cup of coffee a day to begin with.

Dr. Bhatia also explains that besides blemishes, beverages like tea and coffee can cause additional problems. This includes stimulating the growth of bacteria in the mouth and subsequently leading to tooth/enamel erosion. Instead, it can cause teeth to become thinner and more fractured over time.

Another problem induced by these drinks is bad breath, as the residue of the drink sticks to the tongue.

How to prevent teeth stains?

A common tip is to change your diet to combine certain foods that help heal scars. These include some raw fruits/vegetables such as strawberries or lemons which contain natural fiber that breaks down bacteria and cleans teeth.

A simple, but still useful tip is to brush at least twice a day and for 2 minutes each time.
