What is the Achilles tendon?

It plays a role. “It plays an important role in daily movements such as walking, running and jumping, as well as in athletic performance.”

What types of injuries affect the Achilles tendon?

“Injuries to the Achilles tendon can have profound effects, severely impairing a person’s ability to engage in daily activities. Treatment often involves surgery to repair or reconstruct the damaged portion of the tendon. Initially, patients may receive a plaster slab. Swelling should be reduced, followed by Through open surgery or minimally invasive procedures using an arthroscope,” highlights Dr. Vaibhav.

What is the significance of Achilles tendon?

Dr. Vaibhav added, “The purpose of surgery is to approximate and strengthen the damaged tendons, ensuring proper healing and restoration of function.” The significance of this tendon dates back to Greek mythology, where the legendary warrior Achilles was disabled by an injury to it, causing his fall. The term “Achilles heel” symbolizes a weak point that, if injured, can compromise athletic or combat-like activities.

Post-operative care

“The purpose of Achilles tendon surgery is to approximate and strengthen the damaged tendons, ensuring proper healing and restoration of function. However, surgery alone is not enough. Postoperative care is critical, with attention to wound healing, as the Achilles tendon has a limited blood supply, which can sometimes hinder healing. A structured physiotherapy and rehabilitation program is essential to translate proper healing into restored strength and function,” shares Dr. Vaibhav.
