High blood sugar: Managing diabetes-related foot problems, experts share information health news

Maintaining proper foot health is essential for diabetics, as it can significantly affect the nerves and blood supply to the feet, leading to ulcers, a top diabetologist said on Tuesday.

Infections arising from diabetes can also lead to amputation due to reduced blood supply to the legs.

“Ensuring foot health is essential, especially for those managing diabetes,” said Dr. V Mohan, chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Center, in a post on

“Nerve damage can be unpredictable. Consult your doctor if you experience any changes in sensation (pain, tingling, numbness, etc.) in the toes, feet, or legs,” he adds.

Diabetic foot is one of the most common complications of blood sugar due to peripheral artery disease and diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage). Studies show that about 85 percent of all diabetes-related foot or leg amputations begin with foot ulcers.

Dr. Mohan also shared some important tips for diabetic foot care like keeping blood glucose under control, washing feet daily and drying them well.

He emphasizes the need to check toes “for any fungal infection” and to consult a specialist “for corns, calluses or ingrown toenails.”
Importantly, the doctor said people must “not attempt to self-treat this condition”.

About 15 percent of people with diabetes experience diabetic foot problems, leaving many with potentially devastating complications. About 40,000 lower limb amputations are reported to occur in India every year.
Dr. Mohan advises diabetic patients to protect their feet from temperature extremes and avoid walking barefoot.

“Wear socks with your shoes, as leather, plastic and man-made shoe materials can irritate the skin and cause infection.”

He recommends regular non-impact exercises on the legs like swimming, cycling and yoga to increase blood circulation.
