All about Walter Reed National Military Medical Center – where the US Secretary of Defense went for treatment health news

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was released from the hospital Monday after a two-week stay, as a result of complications from treatment for prostate cancer, according to the Pentagon. Initially, Austin, 70, entered Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on December 22, 2023 for prostate cancer care. He returned on January 1, battling complications including an infection. Details of his hospitalization emerged four days later, with the Pentagon releasing the medical reasons on January 9, 2024.

Notably, the Pentagon delayed a formal announcement for four days, opting to notify other top government officials of Austin’s absence first.

During this period, Austin’s duties were temporarily transferred to Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks. Amazingly, he was not informed of his boss’ hospitalization until two days later.

“I am grateful for the excellent care I received at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and would like to thank the outstanding doctors and nursing staff for their professionalism and fantastic support. I am grateful and grateful for all the well wishes I have received for a speedy recovery, Austin said in a statement about his release.

Doctors at Walter Reed said Pentagon received tests and non-surgical care to meet the requirements, including major leg pain, and will no longer need cancer treatment.

“Secretary Austin’s prostate cancer was treated early and effectively, and his prognosis is excellent. He plans no further treatment for his cancer other than routine post-prostatectomy surveillance,” his doctors said in a statement released by the Pentagon.

Austin will work remotely with access to secure communications capabilities before returning to the Pentagon, the statement said. President Joe Biden said Friday that he had confidence in Austin despite the president’s mistake in the Pentagon chief’s judgment about his secret hospitalization.
